Tata Builds India's First Commercial Semiconductor Fab in India
India has taken a historic step toward becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub as Tata Electronics advances the country's first commercial front-end semiconductor fabrication (fab) facility in Dholera, Gujarat. The landmark project has gained further momentum through a strategic partnership with Dutch semiconductor equipment leader ASML, which will supply advanced lithography technology essential for chip production.
The semiconductor fabrication plant, backed by an investment of approximately $11 billion, is designed to manufacture semiconductor chips for industries including automotive, artificial intelligence (AI), consumer electronics, telecommunications, and industrial applications. At full capacity, the facility is expected to produce 50,000 wafers per month, significantly strengthening India's domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
The Dholera semiconductor fab represents a cornerstone of the Government of India's semiconductor strategy under the India Semiconductor Mission and aligns with the broader Make in India initiative. The project is expected to reduce dependence on imported chips while attracting global investments, fostering technology transfer, and creating a skilled semiconductor workforce.
ASML's involvement will bring world-class lithography systems, talent development programs, and supply-chain expertise to the project, enabling Tata Electronics to establish international manufacturing standards for semiconductor production.
The commercial fab is expected to manufacture semiconductor technologies ranging from 28nm to 110nm process nodes, serving high-growth sectors such as electric vehicles, smartphones, AI computing, industrial automation, and communication infrastructure. The project also supports India's ambition to become a trusted global semiconductor manufacturing destination amid growing demand for resilient supply chains.
Industry experts believe the Tata semiconductor project will act as a catalyst for ancillary industries, research and development, advanced packaging, and semiconductor design, creating thousands of high-skilled jobs while enhancing India's technological competitiveness.
The establishment of India's first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant by Tata Electronics marks a transformative moment for the country's technology and manufacturing landscape. As construction progresses and strategic global partnerships continue to strengthen the project, the Dholera fab is expected to play a pivotal role in positioning India as a major player in the global semiconductor industry.
